Looking for a Pi Day math activity for 8th grade math and Algebra that reviews circles, pi, and proportional relationships? This Pi Day math mystery has students evaluate true and false statements about area, circumference, linear vs. nonlinear relationships, and rate of change to solve the case. Perfect for Pi Day (March 14).

This activity works well as stations, small group work, partner practice, or independent review. Students practice critical thinking and math reasoning while reviewing key 8th grade and Algebra concepts—without feeling like a worksheet.

How the Mystery Works

  • Students read a short Pi Day mystery scenario
  • Six suspects each make a math claim in every round
  • If a statement is false, that suspect is guilty.
  • The one suspect whose statements are all true is innocent
  • Students track their reasoning and solve the case!

Math Concepts Covered

  • Pi as a ratio of circumference to diameter
  • Area and circumference of circles
  • Proportional relationships
  • Linear vs. nonlinear relationships
  • Constant rate of change
  • Exact vs. approximate values of π

  • Math stations
  • Partner or small-group work
