Use this math mindset questionnaire to assess how your students feel about math. Do they see mistakes and challenges as opportunities or setbacks? Do they believe they can succeed in math? How do they handle difficult problems? Gathering this information is crucial because if your students have a fixed mindset, it's important to take time to foster a growth mindset.

At the start of the school year, many math teachers focus on identifying and addressing knowledge gaps. While this is important, I suggest that the first question should not be about what your students know or don’t know.

Instead, start by determining if your students are open to learning. Many students struggle with a mental block in math, believing they aren't "math people" and will always struggle. Breaking down this mindset is essential before meaningful teaching can begin. You may need to help shift their mindset to foster a positive learning experience.
